What is localhost:3000? A plain-English guide

By techynAR · Updated

Short answerlocalhost:3000 is the address of an app running on your own computer. localhost means “this computer” and 3000 is the port, a numbered door the app listens on. Each door can only be used by one app at a time, so if an old app is still running there, a new one can't open and you see “port already in use”. Portmole shows every app running on your Mac by name and lets you close the old one with a click.

localhost: your own computer

When you build a website or app, you usually test it on your own computer before putting it online. Tools like Lovable, Bolt, Cursor, Claude Code and v0 do the same thing behind the scenes. They start a small server on your Mac and give you an address like http://localhost:3000 to open in your browser. Nobody else can see it. It only exists on your machine.

3000: the port, or door number

Your computer has thousands of numbered “doors” called ports. Each running app picks one and waits behind it for your browser to knock. Popular tools have favourite numbers:

Why “port already in use” happens

Only one app can use a door at a time. Closing the browser tab doesn't stop the app, and closing the editor or terminal often doesn't either. The app keeps running quietly in the background, still holding its door. When you (or your AI tool) start the project again, the door is taken, so you get an error like Port 3000 is already in use, or the new copy silently opens on 3001 instead.

Nothing is broken. Your computer is just still running the older copy.

How to close the old app

If you are comfortable with the Terminal app, this finds what is on port 3000:

lsof -nP -iTCP:3000 -sTCP:LISTEN

It prints a line with a number under PID. Close that app with the command below, swapping in your number:

kill 12345

Restarting your Mac also closes everything, if you'd rather not touch the terminal at all.

The easier way

Portmole is a free Mac app that sits in your menu bar and shows, in plain words, every app running on your computer: “My Portfolio Site” instead of a number, and which project folder it came from. Click to open it in your browser, or click ✕ to close it. No terminal, no commands.

Frequently asked questions

Can other people see my localhost:3000?

No. localhost only works on your own computer. Other people can only see your app once you publish or deploy it, or if you deliberately share it on your network.

Why does my app open on localhost:3001 instead of 3000?

Because an older copy is still running on 3000, so the new one moved to the next free door. Close the old one and restart, and it will go back to 3000.

Did I break something when I see “port already in use”?

No. It only means an earlier copy of an app is still running in the background. Closing it fixes the error.

How do I see everything running on localhost on my Mac?

Run lsof -nP -iTCP -sTCP:LISTEN in Terminal, or open Portmole, which lists everything by name.

Skip the terminal

Portmole shows every port your Mac is listening on and closes any of them with one click. Free, signed and notarized, about 7 MB.
